Infrastructure inspection training
Learn how to document bridges, utility corridors, retaining walls and structural assets for quiXzoom missions. Approval rate tips included.
What counts as infrastructure
Infrastructure missions cover publicly accessible structural and utility assets. The following asset categories are in scope:
- Bridges and overpasses — road bridges, footbridges, pedestrian overpasses, railway underpasses
- Retaining walls — structural walls supporting earth or embankments adjacent to roads and rail corridors
- Utility pylons and masts — electricity transmission towers, telecom masts, light standards
- Drainage systems — culverts, stormwater inlets, outflow channels, drainage channels adjacent to road surfaces
- Tunnels and underpasses — portal structures, ventilation openings, visible interior sections accessible from public areas
Missions will specify the exact asset category and location. If the assigned asset is not present or has been removed, report via the app rather than photographing an alternative.
Required shots per mission type
Each infrastructure mission has a defined shot list. Deviating from the shot list is one of the most common causes of rejection. The standard set for most infrastructure assets:
- Front elevation — the primary face of the asset, photographed square-on, filling approximately 70% of the frame. GPS must be recorded at this position.
- Detail shot — close-up of a condition indicator, connection point, or visible wear zone specified in the mission brief. Do not use digital zoom.
- Reference shot with context — a wider shot showing the asset in its surroundings, including a visible street sign, landmark, or address reference to confirm location.
Mission brief takes precedence
Always check the specific shot list in the mission brief before starting. Premium missions may require additional angles, interior documentation, or sequential captures.
Common rejection reasons
- Wrong angle: Photographed from the side rather than square-on to the primary face. Partial occlusion by vegetation or parked vehicles.
- Insufficient detail: The close-up shot lacks the resolution or proximity to identify the condition indicator. Subject fills less than 40% of the frame.
- GPS mismatch: EXIF GPS coordinates are more than 15 metres from the declared mission location. Usually caused by capturing indoors or with GPS not fully acquired.
- Digital zoom used: Pixelation artifacts visible in the detail shot. Move closer rather than zooming in software.
- Wrong asset: A different structure of the same type was photographed. Confirm the asset against the reference image in the mission brief.
Equipment requirements
- Camera: Smartphone rear camera, 12 MP or higher. Front camera is not permitted for any infrastructure mission type.
- GPS: Location services must be enabled and set to high accuracy (precise) mode before beginning the mission. Allow 30–60 seconds for GPS lock in open sky before the first capture.
- Digital zoom: Disabled. Move physically closer to the subject to obtain detail shots.
- Stabilisation: Use both hands when photographing close-up detail shots. Motion blur is a leading cause of detail shot rejection.
Field safety
Safety obligations are non-negotiable
Mission completion does not override personal safety or legal access requirements.
- Access restrictions: Never enter fenced, gated, or clearly signed restricted areas to complete a mission. Report access restrictions via the app.
- Traffic safety: When photographing road-adjacent infrastructure, stand on the pavement or designated pedestrian area. Do not stand in a live traffic lane. Use a high-visibility vest when working within 3 metres of moving traffic.
- No trespassing: Rail corridors, utility substations, and operational construction sites are never accessible for quiXzoom missions regardless of the mission brief.
- Height: Do not climb structures, walls, or embankments to obtain a required angle. Report the restriction and move on.
How approval rate affects tier progression
Your approval rate is the percentage of submitted missions that pass the AI quality review. It directly controls your access to higher-value mission types and your tier classification:
- Below 70%: Access to standard missions only. Tier advancement blocked until rate recovers.
- 70–84%: Supplementary tier. Standard mission pool accessible.
- 85–94%: Active tier. Unlocks mid-tier infrastructure and facade missions with higher compensation.
- 95%+: Professional tier. Full mission pool including surge and specialist assignments.
Reviewing your rejection reasons after every submission cluster is the fastest way to raise your approval rate. Each rejection includes a specific reason code — address those before submitting the next cluster.
