Building facade inspection training
Learn to document building facades, storefronts and exterior conditions for quiXzoom property and insurance missions.
What facade missions cover
Facade inspection missions are commissioned by property managers, insurance assessors, and municipal authorities. The goal is a systematic photographic record of the exterior condition of a building or group of buildings.
- Exterior walls — cladding condition, visible cracking, staining, spalling, or water ingress indicators
- Windows and glazing — frame condition, visible damage, sealing integrity on visible surfaces
- Signage — commercial signage, building name plates, address identifiers — condition and legibility
- Entrances and doors — main entrance condition, security features visible from public thoroughfare
- Condition indicators — efflorescence, rust staining, biological growth, subsidence cracking, or other deterioration markers specified in the mission brief
Shot requirements
Standard facade missions require the following shots. Mission briefs may add to this list; never subtract from it.
- Full facade shot — the complete elevation of the building face in a single frame. Step back as far as necessary. Do not stitch multiple images in the field.
- Detail shots of damage or wear — each visible condition indicator identified in the mission brief must have a dedicated close-up. Fill at least 60% of the frame with the defect.
- Address reference — a shot confirming the building address. Use the street number plate, door number, or a clear view of a named entrance. This shot establishes mission location compliance.
Shot sequence matters
Capture the full facade first, then work systematically from left to right or top to bottom for detail shots. This helps reviewers correlate detail locations to the overall elevation.
Common rejection reasons
- Obstructed view: Vehicles, scaffolding, vegetation, or street furniture block a material portion of the facade. Reposition or, if the obstruction is permanent, document it and report in the app.
- Wrong building: The address reference confirms a different building or street number. Double-check the brief address and building reference image before shooting.
- Blurred details: Detail shots are motion-blurred or out of focus. Use both hands, brace against a surface, and allow autofocus to settle before capturing.
- Incomplete facade: Only a portion of the primary elevation is shown. Back up further or use a wider focal length setting.
- Missing address reference: No shot confirming the building identity. This is a mandatory component of every facade mission.
Lighting and weather conditions
Lighting quality significantly affects facade documentation acceptance. Optimal and suboptimal conditions:
Overcast sky (preferred)
Diffuse light without hard shadows. Reveals surface texture and defects evenly across the facade. Ideal for condition documentation.
Bright overcast or hazy sun
Acceptable. Shadows are present but soft. Rotate your position to minimise shadow coverage on the primary elevation.
Direct midday sun
Challenging. Hard shadows may obscure condition indicators. Document shadow coverage in the submission notes. Morning or late afternoon preferred when rescheduling is possible.
Rain or heavy overcast
Acceptable if the surface is not actively wet enough to cause significant reflections. Wet surfaces can reveal certain deterioration types more clearly. Do not submit if rain obscures facade detail.
Privacy considerations
Privacy compliance is mandatory
GDPR and equivalent national regulations apply to data collected on quiXzoom missions.
- Pedestrians: Avoid capturing identifiable individuals in submitted shots where possible. If a pedestrian is present in a facade shot, capture the image and submit — incidental pedestrian presence is acceptable. Do not specifically frame or focus on individuals.
- Vehicles with readable plates: Do not submit shots where a private vehicle number plate is the primary subject or clearly legible in the foreground. Street-level context showing traffic in the background is acceptable.
- Private interior spaces: Do not capture through ground-floor windows into private or residential interiors, even from a public pavement position.
- Children: Do not submit any image where a minor is identifiable.
The quiXzoom AI review system flags potential privacy issues prior to delivery. Consistent privacy-compliant submissions improve your review pass rate.
